The Icks No One Talks About When Building a Business

I love the online business industry — and the process of building a business you're genuinely proud of. But there are certainly times when some things give me the ick.

A lot of my clients, peers, and friends in this world feel the same way at one point or another (I know this because we've spoken about it behind closed doors). And every time we have a conversation or even a vent session, we always land on one thing.

We all want business to be better. For everyone.

While we work on creating that betterness, here are some of my biggest icks.

How Fickle It Can Be

You create relationships. You build trust. You make a real impact. You start feeling really good about the trajectory of your business.

Someone you trusted starts talking about you in a room you're not in. And just like that, the relationship shifts.

Mentor Hopping

You have a mentor you adore. They get you. They challenge you.

But then a new mentor comes on the block with their results and impact. And just like that, you want to work with them because they must have something else that you need.

The Comparison Without Context

You cannot compare someone's success, wins, or milestones without all the context.

And yet, judgment always comes or finds its way to bleed into things somehow.

Lack of Accountability

We've all seen it - and you can consider yourself lucky if you haven't.

Clients and coaches who cancel payment plans whilst in contract, breach terms, and don't show up. And yet, it's always the provider's fault.

(This does work both ways, though. If you get it wrong as a provider, this is your learning moment. We're all human, and we all make mistakes. If you've done any of these things, you can use your experience to do better in the future.)

The Digs

I have never been a confrontational or judgy person. And I'd never be like that in business.

People may have their own opinions, but I would be surprised if unprofessional, bitchy, negative, or unkind ever came into it.

You don't have to like everyone. I get that. But be kind. Always.

The Fakery

Listen, I have been strategic about my business, brand, where I put myself, what I attend, where I speak.

But I have always ALWAYS been myself, shown my heart, & been honest in the public eye and behind closed doors. My clients know my heart, truth, and love.

There may be walls front of house, but everything I share is still real and still mine.

Be honest.

Success Becoming the Poster for Sales

Just because someone is having success in their own business doesn't mean they can replicate that for you.

Ensure you work with someone who knows how to get results for YOUR business. And as a business owner, ensure your client credentials speak as loudly as your own.

The Unrealistic Pace of Building a Business

I've been here for just under 10 years. My business has consistently made multi-6-figures in recurring revenue for the past 8 years.

I've had record-breaking months, launches, and years.

But I started in 2016 and did what most people wouldn't and still don't want to do.

Creating long-lasting success and stability takes more than 6 months. Building a business that actually lasts requires patience most people aren't willing to have.

We All Want a Business Done Better
