3 Ways to Calm Your Nervous System as a Business Owner

We all have those moments where life feels a little too full—where the stress of managing it all can take a toll on our energy. Over time, I’ve learned that feeling good and staying grounded doesn’t have to be complicated. In fact, I’m all about keeping things simple and practical, whether it’s in life or business.

Read on for 3 game-changing ways to calm your nervous system as a busy business owner. The best part? They’re easy to apply!

1. Turn On Chill or Classical Music to Set the Mood

One of the simplest changes I made was in my morning routine. Now, before anything else, I turn on smooth chill or classical music as soon as I head downstairs. Whether I’m making breakfast, prepping my morning coffee, or getting the day started with activities, this type of music instantly shifts my energy.

Music is such a powerful tool for calming the nervous system. There’s something about a calming melody or smooth rhythm that sets the tone for a peaceful morning. Try it! You might be surprised how something so small can set a more peaceful tone for the rest of your day.

2. Get Dressed for the Energy You Want to Feel

The moment I get out of bed, I get dressed for the day. I choose an outfit that reflects the energy I want to bring into my day. Sometimes it’s sporty if I have a lot of physical activity planned, sometimes it’s something bright and comfy if I want to keep things low-key, or put-together if I want to feel more professional and focused.

Just yesterday, I swapped out my usual gym wear for something a bit more formal because we were going to a Sunday roast. Instantly, I felt a shift in my energy—I was no longer in "workout mode" but ready to enjoy a more social, relaxed vibe. The way we dress impacts how we feel, so dressing with intention can truly set the mood for your day. Think about what kind of energy you want to bring to the day, and let your clothes support that feeling.

3. Set 3 Simple Goals for the Day

I used to think goals had to be big, audacious, and life-changing to make an impact. But over time, I’ve realized that even small, achievable goals can do wonders for your mindset. Each morning, I set three goals for myself. These goals don’t have to be monumental—they just need to be something that moves me in the right direction.

For example, today my three goals are:

  1. Have successful calls with all my clients.

  2. Eat a wholesome, home-cooked lunch.

  3. Get some exercise after bedtime is done.

Notice how they’re simple but intentional? Each of these goals supports the kind of day I want to have. And there’s a great sense of satisfaction that comes from checking things off, no matter how small they are.

The Power of Intention

Everything we do starts with intention. What we decide to focus on, what we bring our attention to—these are the things that expand. When life feels full and overwhelming, it’s even more important to be intentional about how we want to feel.

These three habits—calming music, dressing with intention, and setting small, achievable goals—are my go-to ways of maintaining balance and keeping my nervous system in check. They’re simple, practical, and easy to integrate into even the busiest days.
