When the Life You Built No Longer Fits

There is a rule so many ambitious women have inherited: once you choose a path, you have to stay on it. You’re supposed to commit, keep going, and avoid wasting all the time and money you’ve already invested. But what happens when the person who made that decision five or ten years ago isn’t the same person you are today?

You are allowed to change your mind.

Maybe it’s a business model that no longer fits, a career you’ve outgrown, the way you work, the clients you serve, or an identity you’ve been carrying around for years. Sometimes we stay in those things because we’re more concerned with what people will think if we change than with what we actually want now.

Your Life Changes, So Your Business Can Change Too

I’ve changed direction plenty of times in my own life. I started my career in teaching, moved into anxiety and mental health coaching, and eventually transitioned into business mentoring. Each change felt terrifying at the time, and there were people who questioned why I would walk away from something that was already working.

Then I became a mum, and my business had to change again.

Before motherhood, I had spent six years building a successful business with sold-out offers, launches, and a large client roster. Becoming a mum didn’t make me less ambitious. It made me rethink what I was building and why. I still wanted freedom, choice, presence, and impact. I just needed my business to fit the life I was actually living.

The version of you who made yesterday’s decisions doesn’t have to be the version of you who lives them forever. Growth changes us. Motherhood changes us. Loss changes us. Success changes us. Life changes us. So it makes sense that our goals and businesses might change too.

Don't Confuse Consistency With Staying the Same

Women are often incredibly loyal. We stay loyal to people, jobs, clients, businesses, expectations, and even dreams that no longer fit. Sometimes we confuse consistency with staying the same. They aren’t the same thing. Consistency is continuing to move toward something that matters. Staying the same is refusing to acknowledge that you’ve changed.

This is where the sunk cost fallacy can keep us stuck. We tell ourselves we’ve already invested too much to change now. We’ve spent the money, built the audience, created the offer, or spent years moving in a particular direction.

Instead, ask yourself: If I were starting from scratch today, what would I build differently?

You might not like the answer, but it can tell you a lot about where you are now versus where you used to be.

You Don't Have to Regret the Chapter You're Leaving

One of the biggest changes I’ve made in my own business has been evolving my brand, offers, and messaging. What I had been doing for six years wasn’t broken. It was working really well. I had simply reached a point where I knew I was ready for something different. And I don’t regret the versions that came before it.

Teaching shaped me. Coaching around anxiety shaped me. Every version of my business gave me something I needed for the next one. Changing your mind doesn’t mean the previous chapter was a mistake. Sometimes a chapter has simply done its job.

You don’t have to stay loyal to a version of your life you’ve already outgrown. You are allowed to change your offers, expand your goals, want something different, and outgrow expectations you once had for yourself. You are allowed to become someone your younger self never imagined.

Before you make your next decision, ask yourself:

  • Where am I staying the same simply because I’ve already invested so much?

  • If I were starting from scratch today, what would I build differently?

  • Which version of myself might be waiting on the other side of a decision I’ve been afraid to make?

Maybe the next chapter isn’t asking you to stay the same. Maybe it’s asking you to acknowledge that you’ve changed and move accordingly.
