Sometimes we stay in those things because we’re more concerned with what people will think if we change than with what we actually want now.

Being busy can feel productive because you're always doing something. You're answering the email, taking the call, squeezing in another task, solving the next problem. But that doesn't necessarily mean you're moving your business forward. At some point, I had to stop asking, “How much can I get done?” and start asking, “What actually deserves my time?”

As a mum, your day can go from school drop-off to emails to client calls to dinner, bath, bedtime, and maybe opening your laptop again once everyone is finally asleep. And that’s assuming everything goes according to plan. Which, obviously, it doesn’t. A child gets sick. Nursery calls. Someone needs new shoes. The dog is sick. The washing machine breaks. You forget about the appointment you need to book. Life happens.

Building a business that lasts means learning to make decisions based on the business and life you actually want to create. It means taking consistent action, paying attention to what is working, adjusting when something isn't, and giving your decisions enough time to compound. Because the goal isn't just to have a successful month or a really good year. The goal is to build something that continues to support you years from now.

And here's the truth: even though everything is more than "working," those few days had me believing it was all falling apart. Even though my clients are thriving in ways that make my heart sing, I had me believing I'd lost my touch. Looking at what's genuinely been a year of growth, purposeful pivots and impact, I still spiralled into thinking I'd never work with another ambitious woman again.

Ten years ago, I was Head of Year 13. I drove to work every day, taught two subjects up to GCSE and A level, counted down to the next half term, and saved £50 a week towards holidays I could only dream about. Everything that's different now didn't come from luck, timing, or certainty. It came from decisions.
